Publication Process

Editorial Review
The journal editors will perform an initial review of all submitted manuscripts and may reject papers that are clearly outside of the scope of the journal.

Peer Review Process
JCEL manuscripts are peer reviewed based upon content type. JCEL uses a double-blind peer-review process, meaning that any information about the authors or their affiliation are masked from peer-reviewers, and the peer reviewers’ identity will not be shared with the authors. At minimum, two reviewers will be assigned to each manuscript.

The review process takes, on average, 5-8 weeks. Final publication decisions are made after the completion of the authors have had the opportunity to review and respond to peer-reviewer or editor comments on their work.

Copyediting
Professional copyediting services are provided free of charge to JCEL authors who have had their manuscript accepted for publication. However, authors are expected to submit manuscripts that are free of major of major typographical and grammatical errors and that conform to APA formatting and citation standards. Manuscripts that are not properly formatted with be returned to the author(s) for revision prior to peer review.

Typesetting and Layout
The editors of JCEL may need to may make modifications to submitted works as are technically necessary or desirable as part of the typesetting and layout process. JCEL will make no material modification to the content of the Work without the Author’s consent. Authors will have the opportunity to review proofs prior to publication.

Manuscript Corrections
Despite rigorous review by both the authors and editors, errors can occur during the publication process. JCEL will make every effort to correct such errors in a timely manner. Notices about minor corrections (e.g., misspellings or grammatical errors) will not be published. Correction notices will be included when a scholarly record has been seriously impacted (e.g., errors in data representation) and a link to the work, as originally published, will be included on the journal's website.

Retraction and Withdrawal of Works
Works may be retracted or withdrawn from JCEL’s website in situations deemed necessary by the editorial staff and editorial board. Situations could include but are not limited to those where errors with research data is identified or in cases of plagiarism or failure to comply with research ethics. If a work is retracted it will remain, as originally published, on JCEL's website. If a work is withdrawn bibliographic information for it will be retained on JCEL’s website but the work will be removed. A note will be added to website indicating that the item was retracted or withdrawn and the reasons for its removal. Authors will be notified via the email provided in the publication agreement prior to a retraction or withdrawal action.
